The Post-Graduation Work Permit is the most reliable path to Canadian permanent residency. Here's how it works and how to use it strategically.
What Is the PGWP?
The PGWP is an open work permit issued to graduates of eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). Unlike most work authorisation, it is not tied to a specific employer — you can work anywhere, for any company, in any role. The length of the PGWP corresponds to the length of your programme, up to a maximum of 3 years.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify, you must: (1) have graduated from an eligible DLI (most Canadian colleges and universities qualify — check the IRCC DLI list), (2) have studied full-time for the majority of your programme, (3) apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of programme completion, and (4) have held a valid study permit.
The Strategic Path to PR
The PGWP is most powerful as a bridge to permanent residency through Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker or Canadian Experience Class) or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). After gaining 1–2 years of skilled Canadian work experience on a PGWP, most graduates become eligible for Express Entry draws.
Key Programme Choices That Matter
Not all Canadian programmes are equal for PGWP strategy. Two-year+ programmes at established universities give you the full 3-year PGWP. Some short college diplomas give only 8-month PGWPs — far too short to build the CRS points needed for Express Entry. Choose your programme with immigration strategy in mind.
Recent Policy Changes (2025–2026)
Canada significantly tightened PGWP rules in 2024–2025. Study programmes in sectors not listed on Canada's skills shortage list no longer qualify for PGWP at private colleges. This makes programme selection critical — always verify PGWP eligibility before accepting an offer letter.
Our Recommendation
Plan your Canadian study journey backwards from your immigration goal. Identify your target PR pathway, the CRS score or PNP stream you'll target, then the programme that gives you the right PGWP length and work experience category. UNIGO's counsellors specialise in exactly this kind of end-to-end planning.
