The UK Graduate Route Visa gives graduates 2 years (3 for PhD holders) to work in Britain. Here's who qualifies, how to apply, and how to make the most of it.
What Is the Graduate Route Visa?
The Graduate Route allows international students who have completed a UK bachelor's degree or higher to remain in the UK for 2 years (or 3 years for PhD graduates) to work, look for work, or travel. Crucially, there is no sponsorship requirement — you can work for any employer, in any role, at any salary.
Who Qualifies?
To be eligible, you must have: (1) a valid UK Student visa at the time of application, (2) successfully completed a bachelor's, master's, or PhD from a licensed UK Higher Education Provider, and (3) applied from within the UK. The visa is not renewable — you must switch to another visa category (such as Skilled Worker) before it expires if you wish to remain.
How to Apply
Applications are made online via the UKVI portal. The fee as of 2026 is £822. Processing typically takes 8 weeks from the date of application. You'll need a valid BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) and proof of degree completion.
Making the Most of the 2 Years
The Graduate Route is most strategic when used as a bridge to the Skilled Worker visa. Spend the first 6–12 months gaining UK work experience, building professional references, and accumulating the salary history that makes Skilled Worker applications stronger. Many Nepali students have used this route to secure roles at UK companies and transition permanently.
One Important Caveat
The Graduate Route does not count toward settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). Only time on work visas like Skilled Worker counts toward the 5-year settlement requirement. Plan accordingly — the Graduate Route is a springboard, not an endpoint.
